Help with ID. Is this my Elegance Coral Problem?

I have a small Elegance Coral that has been pulling away from its skeleton of late. I just noticed this white thing growing on that same end and am quite suspicious that it is the culprit. Can anyone ID this for me and should I/How do I get rid of it. In the photo it's on the right. Thanks in advance.

Hopefully someone here will tell you that it's a harmless filter feeder / sponge of some sort. Let's see.
