Help with ID please.

Early when i set up my tank, i got a small bag of the algea for the refugium because i couldnt find cheato at the time plu i was being impatience at the time and i wanted to get it set it.

Since then, it has grown to the point of filling up the space for the refugium and now im constantly removing some every now and then because theres so much of it.
Can anyone tell my what type of algea it is?
Pros and cons of it?

Looks like green grape macro algae. Not sure on the pros and cons except it spreads like crazy.

Tis Caulerpa racemosa peltata.

Grows quickly so it's good for nutrient export like other Caulerpas, but also like other Caulerpas it can go sexual and melt away. It's not the apocalypse that people make it out to be though, it's just something to be wary of.

If you look at it funny, it might go sexual.

No but really, I'm not sure what the exact causes are but from my understanding it's stress. Whether that be lack of nutrients, changes in environment etc. I've also heard it can happen if it's not trimmed often.

+1. This species is now recognized as Caulerpa chemnitzia.

Also known as mermaids cup. Super bonus in my mind!

Mermaid's cup refers to the very similar, calcified algae in the genus Acetabularia. These are more popular as decorative algae.

Macroalgae can be divided into fragments and attached to frag plugs with glue, as with corals, so they can be more easily inserted into rockwork (ex. see Gracilaria hayi below). I received my Caulerpa chemnitzia unattached in bags, though:

I just received my first online order of livestock today! Specifically, I received 5 different species of macroalgae from indoorcoral on eBay.

Here is what I got:
Caulerpa brachypus
Caulerpa chemnitzia (peltata)
Caulerpa prolifera
Gracilaria hayi
Ulva sp.
A single string of Chaetomorpha was also tangled with the C. chemnitzia.

Macros go sexual for various reasons. Years ago while running 1000W metal halides over 150G macro lagoon with Caulerpa Paspoidies & Caulerpa Prolifera. Before lights out, water clarity was stellar, when I got up in the morning both Caulerpa’s had gone sexual. The water was so tainted, it was difficult to see the back glass at 2’ away. No water change performed. I added an air pump and HOB Aquaclear 110 with activated carbon. Water cleared up in 24 hours.

When seaweed used up major nutrients and light intensity remained high the seaweed went sexual and spread spores as it melted away in a survival technique.

Oh ok, now that make alot of sense.
I do have a decent uv sterilizer on the return line so hopefully that will help incase it goes sexual
