Not sure that this is in right place, not even sure that anyone could know, but, i'd really like to find out what is this, as i newer seen anything like this....

Little background, with some live rock and frags, i got little piece (5-7mm) of some coral, it was small piece of green branched sps, not sure what.

So i put it in tank, after few days i noticed that he started to lose color, and some algae start to grow on him. So i dump him in sump, no light, figuring out that he's dying.

After some days, i noticed that something grow, it was thin needle like, white in color, so i put it back in tank.

As for now, this thing continues to grow, in similar needle form, it gets larger in height and widht.... But no coloration, no polyps, nothing, just white hard needle...

Not sure what can be seen on pic, but maybe someone will have some clue what this can be.

Thanx in advance and apologies for long post.

Can you retake pic under white light?

Does it have any visible porosity at all? When you say hard do you mean completely rigid or is there some give to it? If so and it's growing quickly, my guess would be a type of sponge. Possibly a type of finger sponge. I'd avoid touching it without gloves. I'm interested to see a while light picture as well.

Sorry for late reply, didnt have much time, ill take some pic on better light, this thing is growing, not that hard anymore, it swing with flow sometimes....

In meantime, what is this? White hair stuff, when shaking rock a lot of this hair fells of....

Help!

Looks like what is called Lyngbya which represents hair algae but is a type of cyanobacteria. Even though it looks just like hair algae and is filamentous rather than slimy. It dislodges easily from the rock as you mentioned, has no discernible root or mat structure and grows fast. Lyngbya species seem to grow very fast in warmer temperature tanks, and spreads quickly.
Removal is best by using a toothbrush and scrubbing it off the rock and other surfaces while capturing any floating mass in a net and discard. Addition of liquid bacteria at 1ml per 10 gallons during the day and 1.5ml of hydrogen per 10 gallons at night will help shorten its life.
Thereafter adding cleaners such as Nerite and cerith snails, chitons, and carribean Blue leg hermits will help maintain control.

Help us by taking better pics lol, your 1st photo I can not even guess your 2nd photo is of lava/tooth rock which has green (from your photo) growing in shadows

Green in background is chaeto....

This is small rock, in sump, easy to remove and clean, thats what you suggest if i understood corectly?

Thanx!

Yes. Just scrub it well. Pic is fine. While scrubbing you can use peroxide to nuetralize it more, then clean up crew

Thank you, i'll try to scrub it, if not, no problem to "kill" that piece, it looks cool, but really dont want that stuff all over my tank....

Thanx again!

As for first id, like i said, ill try to make better pic.

Since i added some crabs, that needle thing was gone, maybe they eat it, not sure....

But i noticed this, its not best picture but with phone is impossible to do better....

What is this that grows on this piece of rock, small green heads on stalks?

Other thing i see that growing is that disc-chained thingy, to me looks like halimeda?

Hydroids. The alga does look like Halimeda to me as well.

So, try to cut piece of rock with halimeda, and keep them, kill the hyrdoids, if i understand correctly that they are not good stuff to keep?

Thank you!

I think the hydroids are sometimes a problem if they’re growing amongst corals. Other times they just die off. If it were me, I’d leave the whole rock alone as long as they’re not hurting anything. Some may say that would be a mistake. I’m not sure what’s best for you.

So far, they only grow on that rock + this piece, its not crazy rapid growth, so not sure what to do, most puzzling element is that in tank from wich this rock is taken have nothing like this, no hydroids, no halimeda, yet, they are growing, maybe i introduced them from.somwhere else, but not sure from where, tank is started with dry rock, and all of live rock, even the frags were from that tank that dont have this stuff in it....

Weird.....
