I’ve had this monti cap for a while now and it’s finally starting to take off and grow some but it’s growing downward and is really bumpy looking could this be caused by the lighting and flow. It’s placed on the top of my arch of rocks and is about mid tank.
Lighting is Chinese black box and truly don’t think there’s a lot of flow in that area.

What could be causeing the down growth. I’d really like for it to start playing and growing like a bowl

Looks to be a species of encrusting montipora, not capricornis. A lot of monti caps being sold as such when they are not capricornis at all. Happened to me, it ended up being montipora hodgsoni.

Was recently watching Melev's reef video on Montis. He discussed how placing them low can encourage them to scroll upwards towards the light. May be worth a shot? Best of luck. Mine are fairly young but the ones in adequate light seem to grow straight outwards whereas the lower appear to be pointing more upwards with new growth.
