Help with new tank

These things are growing out of my rocks. Are they good or bad and can someone tell me what they are.

Aptasia. Bad...Peppermint Shrimp (real Peppermint Shrimp!) help, but using something like Aptasia-X is very effective. They always seem to pop up from time to time, just stay ahead of them.

What causes this to come out?

They are hitchhikers... They likely came in on something you may have added to your tank. They are a form of nuscence algae. They can sting other corals and overrun your aquascape. I mistyped... It is spelled aiptasia.

I was just told that I can also burn them? Is this true?

If you have kalk, you can make a paste with water and apply if to the aiptasia.

I have heard that you can use Kalk or a few other preparations, but I have never tried them. Be careful with doing anything that may change your tank's parameters...if everything else is thriving and you start adding even small amounts of anything to correct one issue, you may find yourself with a whole new set of problems... I'm sure you can find some tried and true methods by searching the forums on R2R as well as a Google search.
