Is this normal for a new set up. Started last week with half live rock and half new rock. What is the brown stuff.

Yes, probably diatoms with a little cyanobacteria mixed in for good measure. This bloom shall pass as long as you're using RO/DI water and not adding additional nutrients to the system. I would wait to get a clean up crew until you have enough algae types to keep the cuc feed.

Ok thank you for the help. It's my first tank 40 gal. How long before I add coral?

Ok. He told me sense I was using a lot of live rock and sand from their system it really would not cycle.

As a newer hobbyist I would not have advised you to add coral initially but rather wait two weeks, regardless of the fact you used live rock and sand. With that said using live rock and sand works in your favor but I would not add any fish for at least two weeks, and I would test or have the local fish store test your water for ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

Welcome to the hobby, it's a blast, just take it slow (you'll save money and not become as frustrated). The forums are here to assist not sell you products so our advise is more objective, we are not trying to make a profit so consider that when you seek advise at the local fish store. Be an informed customer and it will serve you well.

The coral is a large polyp coral (LPN), a Blastomussa, see link below. You'll need to learn the basic chemistry and importance of Alkalinity, Calcium and Magnesium levels. It will need light so turning off the lights now is of no benefit.

Nice tank!

Yup all fish have the potential too jump.

Wrasses, Dartfish and Anthias seem to be especially prone to do so. I have had my clowns jump a number of times into the back chambers, in fact I could not get them to stop.

I would avoid some fish types if you decide to forgo a lid, it's totally a personal choice. It can really detract from the rimless look, so it's really up to you and your fish choices.

Blato isn't a cheap coral, unless they gave you a deal. I'd cycle completely first before putting that in there.. I hope it survives...

Evaporation is the firs problem. I'm having to add sex cups of water every morning to keep every thing working right
