Ok I know this has been brought up a lot I'm in a little different situation. My tank we found out was custom built, bigger issue is that they did not leave enough room in the glass overflow to put a proper durso drain, I use to have a tank a long time ago where it appeared like there was one pipe inside of another and it sat with no bends anyone know what I'm talking about

You can run the return line inside you drain, if the drain is large enough. I guess that is what you are talking about.
About noise. Bring the water level up to near the top. lqwer the height of the water fall will lessen the noise. Without the Durso modification, there will be suction air flow sounds.
Another way is to guide the water so that it follow the wall instead of splashing from free fall though the air. There is several ways you can do this. I did a quick sketch for another reefer, will see if I can copy it here

I had a system with a surge bucket. I needed a large overflow box to obsorb the volume when the surge bucket fire. My larger overflow box empty between the surge bucket fire. I used a panel to guide the water flow works well to decrease the noise level. Try this, you will be happy with the result. Make sure you have a large cut out at the bottom of the panel so that the water can flow through this to reach the drain on the other side of the panel.

Have you looked into a HOfer Gurgle buster? these are great for low clearance areas. I use a pair of them in my tank and they are dead silent.

went back and re-read your post after my answer. You are Looking for a Hofer Gurgle Buster. this will silence the Slurp and draining noise. the other solutions here are for the waterfall noise of water flowing into the overflow.

Try a Stockman, much smaller than a Durso and much quieter, or a Maggie Muffler which is a similar design and very compact.
