My RedSea XL 300 has been up and running for 3 months (fully cycled) and is stocked with a fox face and a pair of clowns. I plugged in my protein skimmer today to start dealing with any excess nutrients but cannot stop the bubbles shooting straight up the chamber and overflowing into the cup. Have tried adjusting all valves and even raising the skimmer in the sump by 2 inches but no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

That is the skimmer breaking in assuming it is a new skimmer it usually takes a week or 2 for it to calm down. Just adjust the level to the bottom of the neck of the skimmer.

Thanks for your reply. The issue I am having is I cannot seem to lower the water level at all. Any advice? Image attached

My 160 has 2 main adjustments the big tube twists (bubble height) and then the small screw on top (skimmate thickness) have you adjusted the air tube as much as you can?

I had a 120 and 160 on both of my tanks I wasn't really impressed so went with 2 Deltec skimmers because of the overflow protection they provide and the adjustable DC pump works every time.

Assuming the skimmer is sitting in the correct depth in the sump, you have to twist the main large tube until the large opening at the botton lines up with the skimmer back.....that will allow the maximum amout of water out of the skimmer body. Once you do that, you can adjust that tube as well as the air dial at the top (the smallest of the dials). The larger of the two dials on the top is for minor adjustments and doesn't do a whole lot IMO.

+1 on skimmer break in if you've already adjusted the water level as low as possible- just remove the cup lid and let it overflow for a day or two back into the sump - assuming that is possible in your sump.
