Hey all. My wife is thinking of buying a point and shoot camera and her budget is around $300. What is the best bang for the buck camera in that price range? Im thinking Nikon and Canon but which one takes better pictures and has better, more useful features? I figured I can use her camera sometimes to take pictures of my tank so Im helping her find the right one. Thanks

Check out the Canon Powershot A-640. If I were going to buy a point and shoot for a primary camera, that is the one I would buy. Canon did a really nice job with this camera and I think it is the best in its segment.

Hey Nikon Guy,

I was curious if you had a favored online house for purchasing cameras? I've heard that electronics can really be hit or miss and thought you may have some good recommendations.

Thanks, B

You are right about the hit and miss aspect to buying electronics on line. There are a few real scam operations operating out of New York that advertise ridiculously low prices and then charge you “extras†for things that are normally included with the camera.

Being as I need and value the service end of a local supplier, (When equipment breaks down they give me loaners etc.) I seldom purchase from an online vendor. When I do, it is B&H. They can be found here:

Thanks, I've heard them recommended before so they must be the real deal. I've got by with my old Olympus from like 1999 but it's time for new toys :-)

Thanks!

Any other options for her? Shes a female so she would rather have some slim and small that she can carry around. THe A-640 is nice but it might be too big for her liking.

Never heard a woman complain about it being to big before. Must be genetics!:p

yeah...usually they don't ant a small one!!

There is tons of info on the web about reviews for digital cameras. Nikon named one of about a thousand options!

THats EXACTLY the problem...too many options. Thats why Im asking you experts with experience which is the best bang for the buck point and shoot around $300ish
