I am looking for a little advice on what to do or what not to do with this current outbreak. I have a 34 gallon cube with about 25 pounds of live rock. 1 Pygmy angel and 1 clownfish. This tank was running fantastic for a little over a year. I recently added a new clean up crew since a lot have died off. That is my main suspicion at this point. I have been good with water changes. No ammonia, nitrite or no nitrates. No phosphates either. I did dose with chemi clean to kill it and two months later it’s still growing like crazy. Recently started running carbon again after I dosed the tank. I will post a picture to help identify the problem. My corals don’t like it and are not opening up like they use to. I am not sure what to do at this point. Any help or advise is greatly appreciated.

Despite your best efforts, cyanobacteria can be impossible to get rid of completely. I have found that regardless of whatever I do, every fall I get a little and it stays with me to some extent until spring. I would guess that its due to the changes in ambient lighting from the sun, even though there is absolutely no way any direct sunlight can get to my tank.

Just siphon it off with water changes as best you can. It will eventually take care of itself.

Thank you Yeah just from reading on here my guess was cyano. It’s funny I was questioning sunlight getting to it somehow also. I changed my lights and rodi filters on time in October. I’m just gonna keep hammering water changes. I’ve been doing 10 gallons every month. Do you think I should do a more frequent 5g every two weeks?

Loots like some diatoms as well. Conch, nerite and cerith snails should take care if that a little for you.

I'm assuming you are using rodi water but are you confirming it is 0 tds? I made the mistake of not changing my 4th stage filter and tds went up to like 20 :(

I had a cyano outbreak around 6 months. More frequent water changes and manual removal should help clear it up. Unfortunately I lost a fair amount of sand clumping to it when pulling it out. For me it cleared up after a month or so of weekly 10-15% wc and manual removal.

Good luck!

Yes I am using rodi water. I changed the three filters and left the membrane. This unit is a year old. The tds meter says 0. I have sand clumping also. Should I break it up or pull it out?

I pulled out the sand that was stuck to the cyano and tossed it out just figuring it would be hard to get off.

If you take the time and trouble to clean the sand there is no reason you can't return it to the tank. Me? I'm way too lazy for that. I rinse it a bit and then let it dry out to be added to the bucket by the back door that I use on the patio this time of year.
