So I live in San Antonio which has a tds of about 300. I use a 7 stage aquamax unit. I have had teh unit for about 3 years and have never hanged the RO membrane. TEH tds meter says its still about 98% rejection rate. My issue is that this thing is burning through Max Cap cartrages like 5X fater than the manual says it should. THe Max Cap cartrage is described as a roughing cartrage before the final sillica buster cartrage. TEH question is why am I only getting about 100 gallons out of each cartrage vs what teh manual says of 600 gal. COuld i replace teh maxcap roughing cartrage with a BRS di cartrage and still have it be 2nd to last? the other thing to know is that I did purchase the DIY BRS DI cartrage and it burned through that super quick as well.

Here is a suggestion. Go to the hardware store and get an inline "push-in" connection ice maker filter and put it in the line before your RODI system. These are only a few $$ and are a snap to install and change. Be sure to measure your input line so you can get the filter that fits that sized line. It will "pre-filter" for you (removing much of the junk) and is my best suggestion. I too have "dirty water". My water is so dirty I have had to put ice maker filters in the lines feeding my toilet fill valves so they will last over 6 months.. and it has totally worked.

Also, I would think about replacing that RO membrane... 3 years is a bit IMO.

Not the solution at all. The push in filter removes suspended solids not dissolved solids, completely different. PLus you don't want or need any additional filters in front of the membrane, its the dissolved solids or more likely entrained CO2 that is your problem.

What is your water pressure at the membrane and your water temperature? What is your exact measured waste ratio? Are you using an inline TDS meter or the more accurate handheld TDS meter? How and where are you measuring the TDS, by this I mean is your meter calibrated, do you use a clean glass and are you drawing the sample directly from the filters and not from a storage vessel? What is your tap water pH? How much water do you make at a time? How old are your sediment and carbon block filters and what micron ratings are they, this really shouldn't matter as far as final TDS but can affect membrane headloss which lowers efficiency.

If you are using Spectrapure replacement filters 3 years is nothing on a membrane, mine is over 5 years old, my Phoenix tap water TDS is over 600, I make a lot of water and the rejection rate is still over 99.4% today. Careful which advice you take.
