Repurposing my Iwaki 70 RLT and started the process today of cleaning it up. The cooling fan and cover are pretty rusted from being in the fish room for the last 7 years. The pump is now going to be used for a closed loop so it won't be exposed to all the moist salty air. Would appreciate any advice of how best to deal with the rust. Not too experienced with this. Thought I could start with a wire brush and see where to go from there. Thoughts?

Do you have a rotary tool like a Dremel with a wire brush tip? I would remove as much rust as possible and treat with a rust locking spray. They make ones that help against future rust and make the leftover rust a paintable surface. Then hit it with your favorite spray paint.

Possibly check and see if the make replacement fan blades as well. I'm not sure about that fan but I know you can effect the balance and cause mad vibrations if you remove too much material from one and not enough from another.

Thanks everyone. Hot it with a wire wheel, ospho then some rustoleum spray paint. Worked really well. Not trying same approach with a Dolphin pump.
