this came off an ASM G2 and was purchased not working.

I took it apart but it did not need much cleaning.

when I plug it in I can hear some high pitched/low volume flashing in the unit but nothing of the sort of RPM that would match the running pump.

the ceramic axle looks good

the wheel does not spin with the pump on or off.

I am about to throw it all away

Thanks in advance

Hello swimmingswammi,

If the pump was sitting dry for a while, it's possible that there could be calcium or other mineral deposits inside preventing the impeller from spinning. You may want to soak the pump and impeller assembly in a 50:5) vinegar solutions for a few hours and then scrub it with a tooth brush and rinse it well.

You will also want to inspect the magnet on the impeller assembly to ensure it isn't warped or damaged. If this doesn't fix the problem, you may need to purchase a new pump. The ASM g2 uses a ASM Protein Skimmer Sedra 3500 Replacement Pump . I hope this information helps.

Chris, thanks for the info. I think the impeller magnet is warped. What caused this? I mean was this cause by something that will likely happen again if I replace the impeller or will I be good for at least a year or two? I am guessing it occurs slowly over time until it siezes.

How do I prevent that from happening again? Do you mean that he probably did not clean it enough and it slowly performed poorly and more poorly until it stopped. At which point, it was warped? I just cannot imagine the heat required to warp a magnet.

They probably let it run dry, that's how you warp a magnet or make it swell and seize.

That's usually how it happens. Cleaning the pump can help, but obviously not letting it run dry would prevent that from happening. If the pump itself isn't damaged, you may be able to replace just the impeller and use the pump. Sorry for the delay, but I hope this helps.

The Sedra pumps are nice, but they are prone to the problem you have described. The magnet swells and can noi longer turn inside the motor housing. I have replaced 3 magnets over a period of 8 years. At no time has the pump ever run dry.

I suspect that sand or grit gets caught in between the magnet and motor housing, scratching the surface of the magnet. Once the surface of the magnet has been scored, it swells up. This is the only pump that I have had this type of problem, so I think it is the epoxy or substance the manufacturer uses to make the magnet.
