Help with skimmer on red sea max nano

Hello guys I purchased a red sea reefer max nano aio back in July. I have, as any newb to the saltwater hobby would learned a lot. So here is my current situation. I purchased the setup used from a friend of a friend who for sure everything functioned properly. I was told now would be a decent time to start running the skimmer that is in the back of the tank. For some reason though I just can not get it to function properly I've messed with the sliding gate thing on the left and the air line on the right and still just can not get it to work. Well it works but within like 1 minute the box starts to overflow if I don't shut it off..... Any help?!

What kind of skimmer? Are you sure it's at the correct water depth?

It's the red sea brand skimmer that came with the tank. I will post some pics when I get home from dinner! Thank you for the response!!!

How do I know which is the correct water depth? It just pops into place in the back of the tank

it may need to break in, my tunze took a while before it started skimming. Every time I clean it it has to break in again also you could have it too low in the water level try lowering the air flow and if possible raise it up.

also forgot to say skimmers need fine adjustment and time to settle after each adjustment.

So assuming twisting the know to the right will lessen airflow and what not. After each adjustment how long will it take to settle with that one. How does one break it in if it overflows and super fast

Start by almost completely closing the air flow, give it 15mins and see if the bubbles and water level die down. If they don't try raising the skimmer slightly. Leave it for a few hours once you have hardly any bubbles coming up, then very slowly add slightly more air and the leave it again. Check it again and repeat. You want nice thick white bubbles.

Minimum 1 day to fill, it could take a week or even 2 to fully break in. When it stops filling with water add a bit more air. If you get to the point of air on full and its not skimming very slightly lower the water level. Dont do both at the same time though. tiny adjustments and a bit of time.

Well it works but I'm getting a ton of micro bubbles now!

Whelp after trying to deal with and solve the skimmer issue i have decided i will just pull it out and use the area for extra media! Thank you everyone who tried to help!
