Help with test kit decision..

Okay that's reassuring since I've been tallying what everybody on the different threads says about each test and Hanna is overwhelmingly voted for with PO4. Sounds like I'll have to do a lot of legwork to visit steal all of your dogs but I'll make it work

I have found API's alkalinity to be inaccurate. Elos and Salifert have been accurate for me (except Elos' calcium which was pretty variable); as Salifert has easy to determine endpoints and is more precise with their little syringes, I go to Salifert for almost everything now. The only exception is the Hanna high range copper tester. The Hanna packets (high range copper uses powder in packets) are annoying enough that, if their other kits use powders as opposed to liquid droppers or syringes, I will steer clear of them if other acceptable alternatives exist.

In short, I like Salifert except Hanna for high range copper.

I use red sea but I am in the process of changing over to all hanna checkers. I love them and how fast they are. its a lot of money to get them all and that is why I'm buying a couple at a time. the only one they dont have is for nitrate so I will probably stay with red sea for nitrates.

Thanks everyone for letting me know what each of you run. Im stuck on the red sea pro test kits or the hanna checkers. Does anyone have and use the hannas weekly. The only headache ive heard was the cleaning process which isnt a issue for my ocd self

a lot of us use them daily or multiple times a week. Read what I wrote about how I keep mine in working order.

For what I refer to as "The Big 3 tests" (Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate), I definitely prefer Red Sea. Yes, the tests can take a bit longer but they are pretty accurate. Salifert are also a good choice.

I use the Salifert and Hanna Checkers. I found these 3D printed cuvette hangers on the forums for pretty cheap. I just rinse and hang in the garage for a day.

I use the Hanna checker for Alk, Calcium, and Phosphates (ULR) on a weekly basis. Keep the outside of the vials clean with a microfiber cloth before each test, and rinse out with Distilled water immediately after I get the reading. Give a good vinegar rinse every month or so and again rinse thoroughly with Distilled water. I love the speed, accuracy, and the lack of shades of color guesswork, which I HATE! To me, they are worth every penny!

These are the absolute best options, trust me, I wouldnt lie to you, or would I?

Alk - Red Sea
Ca - Salifert
Mg - Salifert
Phosphate - Hanna Checker (your phosphate levels dictates which model)
Nitrate - Red Sea (only one I've used, not horrible but takes a long time, going to give NYOS a shot when I run out of RedSea)
