Help I'm very new to this hobby. Only 4 months in. Can anyone tell me what this is and why I have it and how to get rid of it. Is it good or bad?

Bubble algae.i think chemi clean will help but research it as not sure.also remove and scrub rocks with heavy growth

I agree that looks like cyano bacteria. Usually more flow will help. Also might be an idea to check your phosphates, and if they are high try and figure out what is the cause. On a side note are you running a protein skimmer?

yeah cyano can cover over corals choking them out. Increased flow usually helps but mainly need to find where the extra nutrients are coming from. Chemiclean I hear works well. I have done the lights off with wrapping the tank in blankets to keep ambient light out for 3 days with great success. Amazing when you unwrap it and there is not even a trace of it left. Unfortunately all of these are temporary fixes. It will come back until the extra nutrient problem is fixed.

Hi, our tank is about 3 months old and we had a problem with cyano for a little while. What we learned is to try and avoid chemicals as best you can. If you don't have any corals, blacking out the tank for a few days will help kill it off. Also, try siphoning it out when you are doing your water changes. You don't want to mix it around the tank by just brushing it off because that causes it to spread. Make sure you are using RODI water and that your phosphates are zero. Adding phosguard to your filter can help reduce the phosphate levels. We bought it on amazon and I used some pantyhose that I rinsed really well with RODI water to hold it. Apparently cyano is just part of a cycling tank and is pretty normal.
