Today my heater broke in the sump. it started smoking and all the corals look pretty bad. But the fish and shrimp look fine. does any chemicals get in the tank when this happens or is just like a electric shock or just smoke lower ph. What should i do. I removed the heater. Should i add carbon. I just added a frag tank to the system today so that added 30g to a 90g tank. Please help. Oh yea. I have a second heater in the tank so that is not much of a issue

Depends on the type of heater, what chemicals are released. Some heaters are epoxy filled and plastic coated and can release a toxic substance into the tank. But with that said, Adding carbon and doing a water change is recommended.

It was a fluval heater. The silver one. Does anyone kno if any chemicals were released or had the same heater explode.

If this is the model you are referring to, from what I can tell, they are not epoxy filled. They are ceramic heaters. If you notice a film on the water something did leech. Then do the water change and carbon. I would watch the tank closely. But I always err on the side of caution and would do both anyway.

Well i did add 30g of fresh saltwater to the system so i was gonna use that as the watervhange and im gonna buy some crabon tomorrow and hope for the best. Should i still do a water change even though i added water.

Did you add the water after the heater broke? If not then the whole body of water would be contaminated "if" there was a problem. So in that case, yes a water change would be needed. Larger bodies of water would be a better situation than a smaller body of water say as in a nano if that is what your thinking. Monitor your tank and make the call then. You may have to do a water change anyway if you have a die off of animals in the tank so be prepared.

No problem. Happy to help

the heater broke this morning and i just added the extra body of water tonight. But i might do a water change in the morni g just to help. Gonna buy the non glass ones next time.

You should be good. I have always used Ebo Jagers and the one I have in my tank now has been in there for 8 years. Made of glass. Everything breaks eventually. The metal Finnex ones are good too but use them with a controller :)
