Ok so alk was at 6.3, I dosed alk, calcium rose to 420, not sure how and mag rose to 1560 not sure how on that either... any ideas?

So I thought that maybe with my tank a little higher for salinity because I haven't topped it off was the cause for the higher readings... But tonight still high after topping it off... anyone have ideas?

What mag kit do you use?

Red sea pro.
domination2580,
I used to use that kit until I noticed it gave myself very high readings.

Can you get your hands on the Salifert mag kit and double check the RSP?

It has been a more accurate kit and way more simpler to use.

I might have to try... but I did test before with mag and cross referenced with another red sea one as well

What Freddie is suggesting is to get a different brand, test and cross reference to tests to check for accuracy.

To busy doing outside work to do it now.
I hear ya!!!!!! :rolleyes:
Be sure to get the Salifert mag kit.
If it does match your RSP you will like it a lot better anyways. No more timing 30 seconds in between each drop of part 1 and one minute after part two while swirling the vial. :)

So I finally got around to getting my tank tested....i used my old salifert test. 1425 for mag....what I don't get it why red sea is so off and how 2 tests can be off that much.

I don't know either but one time my cal and alk intake froze up so I bought the Salifert to check mag against the RSP and the mag read at least 100pm higher than the Salifert. So I dosed up my mag to the Salifert and my cal and alk intake kicked back in.

Also, I'm glad that I don't have to time out 30 seconds in between each drop anymore. :)

I sill love and use the RSP cal and alk kits.

And to add a little bit more, I do also like my RS test kits but have been noticing some inconsistency with my RS alk in the two last reagents in regards to reading. I tested with a different brand and I was were I should be at. I agree with @GoVols if you tests are reading way off, if might be time to compare.

Just did last night both at about the same.

Red seas 1420,
Salifert 1425
I've never seen mag drop from 1600 to 1420ish that fast with out an explosion in coralline growth.
I like my mag hovering around 1400 but that's JMO.

@120reefkeeper
Do you have any incite on dropping mag or do you feel like the RSP kit gave a high reading at 1600 the other day?

Thanks, Freddie

@GoVols

You know these test kits and be a real pain. The RSP kit in particular I've had issues with myself. Mag tests in general are ones that a lot of folks have issues with. Getting a high reading is not surprising actually. Truly I believe he's gotten an accurate reading now. As you said Freddie 1400 is fine IMHO also.

Personally I can't wait for the new Aquaforest test kits. With those at least you have a standardized reference solution so you can check yourself and the test kit. It's going to be very helpful. [emoji4]
