What’s your water quality? Also, is your light a coral light and when did you get that coral piece?
Our water tests well except calcium is a bit high and alk a bit low after a water change yesterday. I've had this rock for 2 to 3 months. Its has had it rough with being knocked over and moved a few times. We got an AI prime and we are still in acclimation mode. At first it was on top (fine with original lights), but didn't look well, so we moved to the bottom, still not happy. now trying the middle and I noticed these holes. Am I killing it?

That appears to be a sponge. Harmless but if you don't like it, you can scrape it off.

Get that alkalinity back up to a stable level! That would be harming it.

IMO...

1. Slow down.

2. Don't start dosing anything yet.

3. Do a complete round of water tests. For example pH. As I understand it, pH effects ALK. Also, I understand there is a relationship between your CA and Alk.

4. I don't think your calcium is terribly high; I usually shoot for the 440 range. My dkh goals range is between 8-11, so IMO, you're ok there too. And with Mg targets between 1200-1400, I think you're ok there as well.

Can you clarify what it is in the photo that has you concerned?

Get alk up But do not overdo it. Potassium and good salinity (1024 - 1026 is favorable). You can accomplish this from simple water changes. Temp also affects their appearance (77-79 - favorable)

/The sponge can irritate and possibly over grow the plays. I have seen it with importing coral. I would pull the plug out and do a dip using hydrogen peroxide. Use tank water and just slowly add some until the sponge starts to bubble. It will kill the sponge, but will not harm the polyps.
