Hi all, so I'm new to the hobby and have had my tank for about 2 months now and I have started to notcice some suttle white spots on my clownfish and am trying to decide if he is sick and should qt. Other than a few white spots he is eating well and pretty active

Welcome to R2R! Sorry about your clownfish, but the great group of people here will definitely get you all sorted out :)
I would absolutely quarantine all fish in the system as this appears this could be brooklynella, which is a common illness for clownfish.
This is @Humblefish 's write up on brook, hope it helps :)
If it is brook, once you move them over to a quarantine tank you'll want to let your main display tank sit without any fish in it for 6 weeks or more to ensure that all traces of the disease are killed off.

Brooklynella:

Symptoms – This is most often seen in clownfish, but it can afflict any fish. The fish’s skin will appear to be peeling or sloughing off, oftentimes causing excessive white mucous to form around the affected area(s).

Treatment options - Formalin or acriflavine bath, followed by additional baths (as needed - but give the fish a day to recuperate in-between baths). You can use formalin in a QT (at a much lower concentration than the bath), but great care must be taken to provide plenty of gas exchange as formalin will quickly deplete the water of oxygen. For this reason, doing baths is the safer option as the fish can be pulled from the formalin if showing signs of distress. Acriflavine is probably the better option for in-tank QT use.

The following products contain formalin: Formalin-MS (preferred), Quick Cure, Aquarium Solutions Ich-X, Kordon Rid-Ich Plus.

Acriflavine can be found in Acriflavine-MS (preferred) and Ruby Reef Rally.

Metronidazole (exs. Seachem MetroPlex, Metro-MS, Hikari Metro+) is considered an alternative treatment for brook. A freshwater dip may provide temporary relief if you are unable to locate any of the aforementioned medications right away. Some even claim total eradication of the disease is possible just by performing multiple FW dips on the fish. o_O

+1 ^^^ Looks like early presentation of Brook. Welcome to R2R. Highly recommend the Ruby Reef Rally. It will treat a variety diseases and conditions. It has both antiseptic and antibiotic qualities. Beautiful fish. :)

UPDATE: It's been two days now and I have setup a qt tank for my clown with some live rock fragments, heater, pump and filter. So far I have been doing a 5g water change each day and dosing the qt tank with aquarium solutions Ich-X and also added a little of fluvals cycle biological booster. If I'm doing something wrong or if anyone has any tips I'd love to hear them being that I've been in this hobby for only a few months now!

IMHO, because this fish was in the DT, any and all fish should be treated the same way, even if they appear to be asymptomatic. There is no point whatsoever in treating the one fish if the disease is still present in the DT.

Agree. Also agree that this is most likely Brook.

Sorry to hear about your beautiful Clownfish, for quarantine i would recommend you use an Ammonia Alert patch by Seachem as Ammonia levels can rise to dangerous levels unexpectedly and it will alert you if they are too high. I would also be sure to remove any uneaten food to prevent water fouling. Hope this helps :)

how would you treat the fish in qt? best meds/tips for fish in quarantine?
