I am new to saltwater I am deciding between 20 gallon long or 40 gallon I will most likely go with a 40 gallon but do I need a skimmer or a refugium I would prefer not do do it as I can’t right now would I be able to add it in later as far as that what fish would be suited for a 40 gallon right now I only want a cleaner shrimp and a fire fish

Skimmer can be added later and will be beneficial. As for Fuge, will make maintenance easy and allow you to have good water quality mamangement and a good ecosystem.

40 gallon will work and leave room for more down the road.
You will need some sort of filter. You will also need to do water changes since you have no skimmer or fuge.

Yes would 25 percent water chances every 2 weeks work or ?

Do them after vacuuming the sand bed when the detritus is stirred up and in the water column

Welcome to R2R... either way you go you can do it on the cheap and add stuff down the road.
