Cannot figure out why this guy has not opened up and is now firm shiny and swollen

How long have you had it, what is the species, what are your tank parameters?

I figured it out the cleaners left too much of the bottom exposed and not covered enough with enough sand causing him to freak out. Piled more sand around him and he's already better. False alarm lol

It's shedding, the shiny is the "skin" which will come off in a few days. It's probably adapting to the tank. How new is it, looks like a good size.

Not sure it was here when I bought the house back in March if I had to guess this tank is about 3 years old

That wouldn’t have anything to do with it, they don’t need sand around their base. It looks like it’s just shedding/sloughing off it’s outer layer of skin/tissue. Can take anywhere from a couple days to a couple weeks, they usually look shiny or almost ‘wet’ when doing this, it should be back to normal in a few days to a couple weeks. But again, the sand has nothing to do with it, it’s base can be exposed and it should cause any issue, if anything, burying its base in the sand will cause the buried part to die since it’s not getting any light and very little water flow (which means it can’t respirate).

Idk..It made him come back out, and normalize almost immediately when I brought the level of sand around him back to where it normally is
