So I am in desperate need of answers I added 2nd hand dry rock to my brother-in-laws 55 gallon tank yesterday I will provide the before and after pics, anyways this rock was soaked in vinegar for almost a week with a power head there was some old dead worms/ starfish on them some of them rocks was said to be caribsea life rocks. We added them and everything was fine when I left at 8pm last night, fast forward she called me at 6:30am and everything was dead all fish/ shrimp crabs only thing living was few snails and hermits. She immediately tested she was showing these parameters via api test kit (all she has) tank was super cloudy

Checked all parameters nitrites are nearly 1.0ppm ammonia is .025ppm nitrate 40ppm ph is right at 8.0

12 hours later she re tested and this is what she got

I’ve had her retest everything again it’s been 12 hours since she last tested all though it’s api I have round about ideas it goes as follows

Ph 7.6
Nh3/nh4- .25-.50ppm ima say probably .30
No2- .25ppm
No3- 5ppm-10ppm
Salinity 1.020
Everything has fallen tremendously since 6:30am it was tested at approximately 6:30pm

she said the color pink/purple was coming off the rocks she scrubbed them in water with toothbrush and the (paint) was falling right off I’ll provide pics of that as well I also provide pics of the rock I’m talking about

I speculate your rocks are leaching vinegar if that is what you soaked them in. That may account for the levels all going down.
Well I forgot to add after we soaked them we let them dry out over night then rinsed them really well but maybe the vinegar didn’t come out fully, could this potentially cause an entire tank of livestock to die off in 16 hours ? I’m just mind boggled here, they lost some decently expensive fish over this issue. And why would the purple/pink coraline looking stuff just peel off ?

Vinegar is an acid and if you did not cold water rinse and allow to dry, youy likely leached it into the tank causing toxicity and low oxygen.
Now - run carbon (high grade) which will remove any traces of the vinegar. Bleach would have been safer but would still have to be rinsed

This is literally the first thing that makes sense
