I’m running a Herbie on my 75 gallon tank with a 20 gallon aga excuse for a sump with about 15 gallons in it. My return pump is a Jeabo DC 5500 running at about 75% this gives me 38 times turnover is this too much to turnover to use the sump as a refugeium? Can I put a true union ball valve on the return line to reduce the flow through the sump or would this cause a back pressure problem with the dc pump?

Also I notice the water level in the overflow drops at the same rate as the water level in the sump due to evaporated water. Is this normal for the Herbie system?

Way to much flow sump flow should be 4 to 5 Times tank volume. I would dial your return down I’m running a reefer 350 85gallons total volume with around 450 thru the sump

Another opposing opinion. I prefer "lots" of turn over thru out the entire system. Is this flow creating micro bubbles or such? I wouldn't think You don't need a valve if the flow rate is already controlled at the pump itself .

It is controlled currently, no micro bubbles. I’m thinking of adding a fluidized filter and if I reduce the flow with the pump there may not be enough pressure in the filter to keep the Mideast tumbling. Isn’t too much flow through a fuge pointless for nutrient export?

I have a 55 right now with a fuge I have a Trigger 39 I have a sicce 7 rated at 1900 an hour wide open it is maybe doing a 1000 an hour SPS love it the zoos take about a month but then they are ok and growing to. I also have a gyre for more flow I think you are fine

In a closed system like our tanks it doesn't matter. ( A lot of water gets filtered a little ) or
( a little water gets filtered a lot) in a closed system it's all the same.
At least that's how I see it

I'd agree on you not having to worry about flow, I run a vectra m1 at 100% on a 60 gallon with no issues, I've never seen flow through a sump as something that needs to be restricted
