Getting ready to rip apart and overhaul my 180. I figured now was a great time to switch from the noisy durso style overflows to the Herbie style. The tank has dual overflows so my plan is to make 1 drain and 1 emergency drain in each box then run the return up the back of the tank. Question is, when I plumb the drains/emergency drain can I just use a T and plumb the emergency drain into the main drain? Or should I just Plumb it all separate?

Technically an emergency should have its own drain, in case it clogs distal to the T. At the same time though, usually durso drains are large diameter (larger than what we usually see for herbie and BA) do the risk of the entire drain clogging is lower.
But besides clogging, it’ll probably be quieter if you have the drains separate (which is why you’re doing this).

I did get gate valves and not ball valves.. Durso is tuned correct and its still pretty loud. Ive had this tank set up in this house for about 3 years now and was never able to get it quiet. My fiancés tank I set up with a Herbie style and its dead quiet

I did the same thing on the used 90 I bought. Works like a charm and I’m glad I have a emergency drain. Use two separate drain lines.
Good luck with the project

Thank you, I figured now is the time to change anything I wanted to do differently

Do you guys think this would work? Overflow one - one 1inch main drain and one 1 inch emergency drain. Overflow #2- One 1inch main drain and one 3/4 return. Or should I use the return hole for another emergency and loop the return piping over the back? The return over the back is my original plan, but if I can keep from having to drill my canopy id rather that. Obviously I will if needed

Durso's are basically silent... maybe a tiny trickle. Are you sure you tuned it right?

They can be silent...at really low flows.

Go with your original plan, if you can. The side with only the siphon drain will be tougher to tune in, a little less safe, and you won't be skimming any of the surface inside the overflow.

You'll be doing cartwheels after you get this tank switched over. It will be safe and dead silent.

I figured as much. I don't mind going over the back anyway since its all covered with the canopy. I cant wait to have a silent tank. 11 years with this dual overflow noise, this is brutal.

I did the same thing. 1 inch main siphon then took the top off the Marineland Durso and added a slip fitting that made it the right height for the emergency.
