I have an overflow with 3 pipes coming in and have the herbie system installed.

Looking at the back of the tank, left pipe is my drain down to the sump. The center pipe is my return, and the pipe on the right is my emergency drain.

I believe the durso set up is the one with the curved drain top that has the air hose coming out the top to help with gurgling noise.

With the herbie style that uses the strainer for the drain, has anyone had silence issues when using this set up? I have never used the strainer approach before.

The valve on the main drain is the secret to making this system work.
Close the valve until the water goes to to but not quite the top of the emergency drain, but still allows water to flow.
It may take a few tries, but it will work.
It will be very quiet.

Get one of the nice valves with multiple turns. Herbies need very precise flow through the value and you can't get that with a simple swing valve.

The difference between making a god awful racket and total silence is usually 1/8 of a turn on a gate valve for my aquarium
