I run a herbie overflow.i have a ball valve to control the amount of water to the sump.the difference in height of my drain to my emergency is about 3" the suction on my drain causes a vortex on occasiondrawing air and getting the slurping sound.would cutting the drain a few more inches(keeping it further under the waterline)be the right move?

Is it slurping on the main drain? 3 inches should be enough to dial it in once you start your return pump and it stabilizes after a few mins. I have my overflow on the back, so maybe I'm missing something.

What happens if you close the valve to bring the water up so the main drain is further under the water?
