We are still in the midst of setting up our office tank. I plan on using the Herbie style overflow, but I had a question:

Dry emergency pipe, or allowing a small trickle?

I see people using both of these options, but I have not seen a reason why one would be better than the other. My original plan was to run the emergency pipe dry, until I saw people recommend running a small trickle of water down the emergency during normal use.

Thoughts?

Small trickle, you'll end up with one anyways, I would be shocked if someone could perfectly balance a siphon and maintain it for any stretch of longevity.

dry pipe means you have exactly the amount of water going down full siphon as your pump is bringing back.

this can change and your pump could clog over time, and less water is brought back, lowering the level in the outer box, creating waterfall sounds.
