So.... Is this a tunicate of some sort? I'm guessing it retracts, though I didn't check.

They're relatively common in quiet spots in the tank, filtering a little bit of water and generally doing no harm. They don't ever seem to get very big, unlike some of the sponges out there. ~Bruce
