Hi R2R!
I'm documenting the conversion of my 23gal Vista (currently mid brackish) to FOWLR with the plan of growing Coralline algae (moving it into the reef space). I've had the tank for about 3 years now at various FW to low end brackish salinities... The biggest reasons I am turning the tank into marine,
- I want to set the tank up for a Green Spotted Puffer...
- Plants are a huge struggle in brackish
- I already do enough DIY that the brackish tank was over halfway to being a marine setup anyway
- FW and brackish has gotten boring
I am now settled on turning the tank into a single species Green Spotted Puffer tank (w/ a single Sailfin Molly that I can't get rid of, nor want to).
Ok, so on to the tank as it stands now... Originally a Fluval Vista 23gal:
- Hood removed and added acrylic/egg crate
- 2 DIY Overflows w/ Siphon Tubes (one is opaque PVC, the other is eshopps tube feeding a modified Lee's specimen container). Both have their own hoses feeding the sump...
- 10 Gal DIY sump (wish I had used 15 gal now, may change in the future)
I've setup an eggcrate plenum w/ pvc risers on the right third of the tank, w/ a 1/2" PVC and airline hose feeding into the bottom. This will likely be turned into a RUGF once I get the flow figured out (likely the 1/4" hose will be fed some low flow).
Substrate:
arag-alive hawaiian black for the left side (will be vaccuumed out into a 1" depth) and arag-alive Natural Reef on the RUGF side (will be adding aragonite sand on top to increase depth).
Rock:
10lbs of Caribsea dry rock and several lbs of black lava rock (that may be eventually removed). 1 large rock painted with drylok basement waterproofer.
Lighting:
- Finnex Fugeray 24" switched for "moonlight" 8 blue leds and
- 24" Current TruLumen Pro LED strip 12K
I have more lighting I can add when I have photosynthetic needs,
- two 24" Current TruLumen Pro LED 12k/Actinic strips
- another planted LED strip w/ white/blue leds (Fluval, came with the tank)
2 DIY overflows sharing an skimmer intake (white 3" pvc)
Sump:
- DIY UV sterilizer (13watt w/ ~60 gph pump)
- Skilter 250 modified w/ reduced flow (internal recirculation) and a limewood airstone (& probably underpowered air pump)
- Eheim compact+ 2000 return pump (at ~50% flow rate, probably 300gph)
[the overflows can handle max flow rate ~500gph, but the fish maybe not yet]
- Various chemical and mechanical filtration (purigen, phosguard, sponge, filter floss, activated carbon).
Return Pump>UV/chemical/mechanical chamber>
drain chamber (w/ heater) > unused chaeto eggcrate section > skilter 250

Some roadblocks to success:
I am currently using very soft tap water w/ store-bought-distilled for evaporation. My tap water is generally considered good quality, but I will need to control the phosphates. I am more likely to do a huge water change using distilled water + salt mix than setup an RO/DI system, but I understand the value and necessity in the long run. This is an estimate of my tap water:
There are best practices I know I am skipping in this conversion. Namely,
- Attempting to cycle too fast (or rather overloading the biosystem w/ two explicitly heavy feeders)
I'm going to mitigate ammonia during the cycle largely with zeolites and water changes... this is no guarantee for smooth sailing, but I'm somewhat impatient to get to full marine salinity and part of the fun is the challenge...
