hermit crabs..

So i just picked up a few small hermits from a LFS. But I forgot to ask for extra shells. I do not plan to go back any time soon. Will my hermits be ok? How long can they thrive without empty shells laying around the tank?

Have a Red legged and Halloween hermits for 2 years and never seen leave or change thier shells. Although I have a couple empty shells on the sandbed.

I have 10 red legged in a 20gal drag tank. I put 2 extra shells in a couple months later after i saw a hermit walking around without a shell. They seem to take turns moving in and out of shells. I think they do this just cause they can. Its fun to watch them trade shells
