I added 6 Hermit crabs to my tank 6 months ago. I think they might be the most entertaining features. Very sad to find half an empty shell, but counted again when they were out playing and I still count all six. I had no idea that they lived long enough in captivity tov molt

Mine are growing... and taking over dead turbo snail shells. It’s kinna been fun watching them fight over the empty shells

They definitely do molt! Scared the crap outta me the first couple times. Just to note, if they’re molting they’re likely growing so make sure they have access to new, bigger shells so they don’t feel the need to kill your snails to steal theirs.

When you purchase hermits, a lot of places will accept a special request of some empty shells, smaller and larger, that they toss in. Not only do crabs grow but baby crabs need smaller shells too! I know emeralds don't have shells but I noticed 5 little babies fighting for some food yesterday. They came out of nowhere, never noticed them before.
