Hermit crabs

Has anyone experienced a hermit crab leaving its shell to get food in a tight spot, juat to eat and then return to the shell?

Not sure about food, but I have watched hermit crabs leaving to try out different shells.

wow- generally when they leave a shell, they are looking to transfer into another not to say they would not return to original one

It a fairly new tank, no extra shells ATM. Noticed what was going on, went to dinner and came back 2hrs later. All 5 crabs accounted for and in their shells
