Hey guys, I just set up my first saltwater tank and I’m getting some algae. I have two dwarf hermits in the tank right now. If I add snails will it be a massacre? If not what snails should I add and how many? It’s a 30g and I’m mostly looking for something to clean the rocks and sand bed

I like conchs for sand beds and trochus for rocks . Add extra empty shells and keep the crabs well fed.

Lots of dwarf Cerith snails. They are machines. I have like 50-60 in my 16 gallon. I have found that they are so small that the hermits don’t mess with them. They also enter every nook and cranny of the rock work. Anytime I order regular Cerith snails they are immediately shell jacked. I like Cerith, Nassarius, and Nerite snails. They work for me.

Take a look at reefcleaners.org.

My personal preference is to have a nice variety of snails and I refuse to put any blue hermits in my display. I do have 1 red leg hermit that has never touched a snail. I’ve had him for about 2 years.

I’m looking at a tiger conch for the sand bed. I don’t want my tank to be overtaken by snails though. Are there any that won’t breed so quick?

haven't had any mass reproductions even with the snails laying eggs on the glass.
I've had better luck with strawberry conchs than tigers.

Get a few and start from there if hermits start to starve they will probably look at the snails. To help with shell swapping I have a bag of empty shells I'll drop a dozen in every other week for a couple of days for the hermits to go through then remove them. They never bother my snails. Definitely get a conch mine does my rocks also.

For reference
My tank is 13 gallons
With 3 astrea 2 turbo 2 small hermits 2 Scarlett hermits an emerald crab and a tiger conch.

Btw one night my hermits organized all the shells in a row and were inspecting them. Almost spit my coffee.

Why do you prefer the strawberry conch? My tank is about 30g if it helps

The thing is the only LFS in my area is very overproduced so I’m trying to order most of my livestock online and usually at the same time so I can avoid paying $40 for shipping on a few crabs and snails. I was wondering about emerald crabs as well, do you have to feed them and do you ever have any issues with them?

how could you not love that face? :D
I had two of each in my tank. the tigers didn't last longer than 6 months for me.

I stayed away from them because I saw a lot of mixed reviews until my GHA got a bit out of hand...That's when I got him and the turbos and another scarlett.
I feed pellets for fish and ill "throw" some into the water so they sink into the rocks twice a week ill put in frozen Mysis. When algae is low I try to get more pellets or Mysis into the rocks for the crabs, when algae is creeping up I let them eat algae. Maybe it will balance out.
