I live in NYC which isn't the main issue. I own my apartment and am very happy here. I don't have all that much space, it's true, but when I say big I mean like 40-50 gallons lol.

Anyway, my hesitation is with when I move. I know I will move in the next say 3-5 years because I don't want to settle in NYC long term. So my main concern is knowing I'll move in some unknown amount of time, is it worth it to invest in an intricate saltwater system? I can only imagine how difficult it is to transfer an aquarium especially halfway across the country or all the way across the country, wherever I'd move to. But it's also far enough away that I want to be able to enjoy something like a saltwater reef tank for at least a couple years and then worry about the hassle of moving it all.

In sum, how difficult is it to move a 50g tank (no bigger than that prob, I only have 670 sq ft).

Not as hard as you might think , with good planning and a little bit of organizing..but then it does depend on how far away you will be moving ,but also there is a very big chance that when you move you will want a bigger tank in your new place trust me !!!!

Very doable! Go for it!

IMHO you have different options. If you are driving to your new destination, pack up your stuff and go. If you don't think some of your live stock will survive, sell it or give it away. My LFS will usually take live returns for some store credit.
If you have to ship a 55 gallon tank across the country, it will probably cost more than the tank is worth.

Agree! Moving a tank takes a good amount of planning and depending on how far you are moving - that directly affects the survival of your fish, coral, inverts. If it is 30-60 minutes that is one thing, but 2-3 days MUCH more problematic - then consider the logistics of breaking down, securing and setting up you tank again - all the while worrying about your livestock.

Complete pain in the butt, Murphy's law always kicks in. Set up the tank as you like and the way you like When the time comes sell everything and start over in your new place.

Do you consider that an option, that you would take. I hate trying to sell stuff I don't want. I would just end up giving it away. I have lots of free stuff if you want to come over. LOL

That city will suck you in and you'll be there for at least a decade. I say GO BIG! lol. I agree with Silva though, once it's time to move just sell all/most and start over wherever you land.

I really want a 800 liter tank, especially since my lfs has a used one for only 300! However I'm not getting it because I plan on moving soon as the end of college is getting near. While I wouldn't mind driving over 800 km, it would be more realistic to just wait the two years and buy a new tank when I move. Just my outlook on the situation

You can totally do it!'Make sure you go long and not too deep - trust me you'll thank me later!!! As far as moving live for now not tomorrow!!!

Best option get smaller tank now - enjoy and get experience than when you move sale it and get what you really want!

Or setup a fish only tank - sell the fish when you move so all you have to worry about is moving the hardware and equipment

my motto is learn from the past, plan for the future but live today like it was your last day so I say go for it.
