Hey everyone - researching reef tanks

Hi! I'm new to the keeping of saltwater tanks but roughly 12 years of research in XD we just set up our first tank 20gH with a 10g quarantine for about $250, plus stock. In the process of planning for our 200 gallon set up when we purchase a house with a $1,500 tank budget (got the tank, stand, fuge/sump, and canopy for $700, skimmer for $50, and weeping over the cost of lights.) Tanks can be made well on any budget, all about what you want to keep! Pre-owned is a valuable asset.

Yeah, trying to figure out what I would need to have what I dream of seems to be the hardest part, I think. Planning for the future, and making sure what I try to do is compatible so I minimize the number of times I have to re-do things. I love reading the build threads, particular when people update and mention what they would have done differently first time they started. Those really help.

I'm always amazed at the prices on amazon and similar sites. In my country when I look at the saltwater specific stores, the cheapest and smallest of skimmers start at 150 dollars...

Welcome to the community!

As others have mentioned, to get the best answers you'll have better luck posting to specific forums. Another powerful tool is the search, I found myself using it a whole lot when I first joined! You can search for whatever you want, even down to specific poster or date.

I do this daily, its wonderful to have a site where the search function actually seems to work :) I'm surprised I havent personally broken the search future, thats how much I've been using it for everything :D

Welcome! As long as you don't post in Danish you'll get a reply LOL. Great to have you here!! :)

I'll try not to, although I do take great joy in trying to get all my English speaking friends to pronounce "Rødgrød med fløde" :D. As if they don't already struggle enough with my name, that pronounciation usually convinces them my language is entirely made up of gibberish.

Welcome to R2R and the salty world. As people said specific questions in specific forums may get best results but people respond everywhere on this site. Lots of knowledgeable and helpful people here who will support and advise you when needed.

Thanks everyone :)

Yes! Ive been lurking for months just reading through as much as I could, trying to understand everything from build types to saltwater chemistry to coral care and upkeep requirements. I've not been scared away yet, and am slowly squirreling away savings earmarked project Reef Startup.
Make sure you take your budget and add 20%.... for misc... you will thank me later I promise... :)

That is a great idea, I'll make sure to do that :D I know from the freshwater tanks theres always one more extra thing that'll be amazing to have... Just one more...

Hey everyone.
I've had freshwater aquariums for many years (25+), and have always wanted to also try a small reef tank. So, Im sadly not in the process of building, I'm more in the process of dreaming and researching what it would take to make the dream come true, cost-wise and hardware-wise.

Does anyone know if theres a specific forum I can post a research thread in and post all the questions I inevitably run into? Or would I need to post in different forums for the topic I have questions about?

Thanks, Ill be sure to check out the videos :) I was aiming for approx. 52 gallons DT with a sump. Posted a stock list on the fish forums trying to figure out if I would need more to be able to have my fish wish list. I was looking for something I could overcome while still having a chance at a stable system with a few different fish in it (and corals later).

Welcome to R2R!!!
Thank you. I see you were recently at Galapagos. I spend time there sailing on a small 16 person boat in October 2018, snorkelling twice a day and visiting islands inbetween. It was absolutely amazing. When I have more time Ill be sure to read your post!
