Hi, I started a reef tank two months ago and I decided to do it without reading one word on anything.
Literally every animal I have put in it has died within an hour. I've killed almost one of everything from petco until one of the employees showed the Instant Ocean salt! He said using salt from the grocery store wouldn't work! But ima keep trying with Morton's brand for now. The other is too expensive.
After all, I've already spent close to three hundred on fish and coral this month.
Anyone know of a fish that's good for beginners or coral that won't die so easy?
Here's a pic of my tank.

Thanks I need help!

This was a dramatization of several post I've been reading over the past week.
They make me mad about the death to the animals most of all but mostly at the ignorance of the people.

Don't get me wrong, just because your asking questions doesn't mean your dumb, I'm talking basic step one questions that every single article on anything saltwater related will tell you.
So instantly right off the bat you can tell they have researched nothing about it and then come on a forum site and want the members who cringe at every new one posted to lead them through step by step how to just run a saltwater tank. Not to mention the individual care requirements for every single animal in it!

I read EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE I could find online, I watched EVERY SINGLE MrSaltwatertank video, every BRS video, about a dozen other how to run a saltwater tank video series on YouTube. NYSteelo is a great one.
I searched every forum site made for how to set up articles for every piece of Equipment, what was needed where it was placed and why and what to avoid.
This was all before I even bought a tank!!!
I had live rock cycling in my laundry room before my tank had water in it.
I have had my tank for 9 months. It is my first ever saltwater tank. It's 100 gallons, I'm no millionaire, I bought every single piece of equipment used and off eBay used, the tank is even used. (So don't say u can't afford a skimmer) I can count on one hand how many corals I have lost. I know exactly which ones they are and how they died. I have lost one fish also in that time. I know exactly how it died and why.

The reason I did all of that was Bc I care about the fish and the corals and I wanted to make them as happy as possible as I bought them.
Is that a crazy thing to want?
When I see posts of why are my corals dying? Then they say they only have a PH test kit. Um that's probably why your corals are dying, I'm a Master detective and it took my expert advise of you don't know anything about what your doing to figure it out.

And the animals pay the price
My rant is over

Just plus one if you know what I'm talking about

I read the begining of your post and I was like whatthe.... Im no expert here, but wow, house plants and table salt!

I got that pic straight off craigslist. It's $30 if your interested lol
And that's without the plant

Soooo you're telling me that Water Softener Salt is NOT a good substitute for Instant Ocean or Red Sea salts?

I've worked in pet stores for 15 years so I know more than most the horror stories that come through. Once I came up to a customer staring at a tank with damsels. He was holding a fish bowl and a net :/ Long story short, he wanted to put the damsels in the bowl. (Bang head on wall)

I do work at a pet store and some of the things I STOP people from doing are crazy:eek:

Great post. as can be seen by my post count, this is my 2nd, I've been reading much more than posting but I felt i had to chime in on this one. Even as a noob this stuff baffles me to no end. My tank is 2 weeks away from arriving and I'm scared to my wits end. I've been compulsively reading information on setting up my first SW tank for almost a year now. It takes about 10 minutes to read some of the most simple "getting started" threads to have some very basic information on setting up a tank. My wife, God love her, has to sit and hear me get frustrated over posts that start like this and i don't even have a tank yet LOL. The information is out there and readily available for practically free in most cases. I guess this is a point of the patience i have gained over my 45 years. I WANT to know as much as possible before getting started. I'm already having mild anxiety over what could possibly happen if i make a mistake. For me, that's all part of the desire to succeed at this, along with some strong OCD tendencies I have haha! I've made charts, files, downloaded pictures and examples, read books, watched videos, all for what, for the desire to succeed.

Trigger, I totally feel your pain and frustration. I can only hope to take all that i've learned and will continue to learn to avoid disasters such as this.

That's exactly what I'm saying biomek!!! Thank you for proving my point.
You can be brand new to this hobby and brand new to even a tank but please just do your homework before you start. There's no excuse for not knowing what your salinity is supposed to be at. It's not some trade secret that you can only find from some secret book. Over 90% of the info people are seeking are in every single reeding 101 book, article and forum site that ur supposed to know before hand.

You can be new in this hobby but please do your homework people!

Goodness...login the fruity pebble substrate lol

I'm waiting to come across one where someone looks for a way to generate ammonia to start the cycle so they pee in their tank lol

I saw a guy on another forum actually telling people to do that. He was corrected quickly... By everyone lol
