whats up everyone. I guess this is a good place to start on here to start talking to people. well I guess ill just start throwing stuff out there and see what you guys have to say about it. ive been doing a bunch of research lately on a bunch of random aspects of having saltwater aquaria. I maintain the tanks at work, (petco) and so we have 2 4 ft marineland commercial systems of saltwater and for the last 6 months or so I've been learning and experimenting because that is my job along with the maintenance to make sure things are well in all the tanks. make sure all of the sick fish that come in are isolated and treated and take in the fish deliveries, do water changes and testing etc. at home I have a 29g freshwater tank with 1 African cichlid and 2 Columbian sharks (long story), a 5 gallon with a betta, a 10 gallon running with live sand and water (probably going to be my iso tank) and a soon to be set-up 20H that will be a nano reef. SO. What I need to do now is plan what im going to have in this tank. so far I have a zoo med canister filter that im unsure of, but I got a good deal on it, I have a 4x18W bulb fluorescent fixture on it by Oddysea, I have the live black aragonite sand still in the bag and that's just about it.. what I need to get before setting up safely in my opinion is a high quality heater, maybe a marineland biowheel filter? and eventually look into a HOB refugium? or should I do a sump? and how? this is why I need you guys. im going to get 2 circulation pumps and this koralia wavemaker plug which is pretty cool I think. but GIVE ME SOME IDEAS:ooh:

Hello and welcome to r2r :welcome: For your isolation/quarantine tank you will want to skip the sand in it and go bare bottom, you can use some pvc to provide hiding places for the new fish, but such things as sand and rocks you will want to keep out of there. There is a lot of good information on this site from setting up a quarantine tank to finding answers on setting up your nano. As already said the possibilities are endless on how you can set up your system. Take your time and do your research on what you want to do and have fun with the hobby.

thanks barb, I guess ill just use that extra sand for my nano because I think I only have 20 or 25 pounds of sand for it right now, how much of a sand bed should I have? in inches from the bottom would give me a good idea. and is a 10 gallon with just any regular filter going to be adequate for my iso tank or am I going to have to set up a modded hob refuge for that too?
