Hello, I'm from London UK, but really like the style of this forum, so figured the time thing wasn't to big an issue right!!

I'm new to this game, been doing tropical fish for a while but just started saltwater. Here's a pic of my tank. I'm now working out my next steps, rock went in today so not to sure when to start adding fish and corals etc... And what types..

But, I'm loving the change over to salt water :)

Thanks in advance all

Hi there, your tank is looking great, welcome to R2R!!!

I Think I see a drilled tank. So that means you must have a sump if I am correct. Next you need more rock. It is recommended that you have 1 to 2 pounds of live rock per each gallon of tank water. You will need to convert that to the metric system, I do not have the conversion factor at my disposal. You can a more dry rock (live rock that has been cured and dried out to make it easier to ship and weigh less) for less money and let the live rock you have seed it. This takes a few weeks and it depends on the tank how that few weeks is. Also, you need to add something to "kick" the tank into a cycle. This cycle is a biological process that takes place in which bacteria multiply to a point that they can process the nitrates in your water. Many do this by placing a table shrimp from your grocery shop into the tank. Then you begin to test your water, it would cloud and smell, then at a point the ammonia, nitrates, and nitrites will peak and return to the values we want them to. After that has happened you can begin to add fish. You only add one or two fish at a time over a period of time so you will not trigger another mini cycle and stress the fish. You can add coral, snails, shrimp, hermits, crabs, micro algae and etc. at anytime after you have completed the cycle.

EDIT: excuse my manners, Welcome to R2R.

Thanks, I got the rock you see in the tank today, I would have got more but my local shop didn't have a great selection. In my humble opinion. So I'll go out again tomorrow. But you're right, it isn't cheep, spent £200 ($350), people talk me out of online due to the size of the rocks and also the hit and miss condition...

I had my water tested today and during the week, the local shop said I could start adding fish next week, as the levels are good. Do you think that's too soon..?

IMO, you should not listen to that, they want to sell fish. Wait until you see a cycle and you need to be testing your own water with your own testing kit. How long has your water been in that tank? AND you do not have enough live rock yet. IMO you need to think about the fish you like and which fish can live together with which fish while you wait. Plan to add one fish at first, it may die. One dead fish is bad enough.

You haven't said anything that indicates your tank has cycled so I must assume it has not and my recommendations are based on that. It "could" take your tank a month to cycle or a few days. It does need to cycle BEFORE you add life. The cycle will most likely kill or seriously stress any life forms you add too early. I have heard of tanks taking several weeks to cycle. Nothing happens fast in this hobby, so sit back and enjoy the slow relaxed pace and you will get much more out of this science we call a hobby.

Good luck, others will chime in and add more instructions as well.

EDIT: sorry, just read your above post. If you added the rock today your tank can not possibly be cycled yet. Sorry. Don't worry, everything will happen when it happens. You are going to be learning plenty, and have plenty to do in the mean time doing google searches, reading, and learning. I look forward to hearing back on how it is going. You are going to make mistakes, we all do, and we all made big ones at first. Many of the worst mistakes are made early because of excitement and desire to do too much too soon.

Many are here watching and willing to help. Every tank is different, so you will be sorting out advice and doing the best you can and soon the light bulb will come on. In 6 to 8 months you will have a good looking tank!
