I decided to start my first salt water aquarium! I have a 36g bow front corner aquarium with 8-9g sump. A coralife 65 super skimmer. I had put the dry rock and sand and water in aquarium like 4 days ago. The water in the tank is a bit milky and I don't know why? I have not added anything to start the cycle yet.
When is coming to the skimmer is producing tons of micro babble that are going in the DT. Needs maybe more time to brake in?

The super skimmer has a filter box that has a sponge in it to help with the micro bubbles but yes it could be apart of the break in period my skimmer seemed to do that also in the sump

I have set up the filter box but is not helping to much. The hole skimmer body is full with micro babble.

You don't have to run the skimmer until after the cycle . And Welcome to the Reef!

Welcome to R2R and to saltwater reefing:)

The normal cycle is about 60 days before you even attempt to add fish;) 45 day one can add a few clean up crew to start eating the algae caused buy that cycling process. The milky water is caused by the system trying to balance itself.

The skimmer should take about a week to break in, and with the system just starting up you will have the bubbles. I should settle down when the system has nutrient to skim out:)

Be patient with reefing, adjustments take time to see the impact. I am glad you are asking and looking for answers, there always help in a post;) or we will help you find an answer to your question

Welcome to R2R!

Thanks for the great advice. I'm thinking to try to start the cycle with bio-spira and ammonia and see if will work!

I always use pure ammonia, just make sure it's pure and has no detergents.

Planning in advance. What to add first CUC or fish?. My daughter and I love clown fish. It has to be the first or last?

Ideally CUC, let them do some work for a week or so then fish. Clowns are always a good choice.

So after adding ammonia and bio-spira yesterday , I have now 0 ammonia, 2-5 ppm nitrite , hard to see with API test, and 40 ppm nitrates. I will do another test tomorrow to see where is going.

Depending on how much ammonia you added, thats a good sign if in a day it processed all of it. I would assume that testing tomorrow or the day after would result in no nitrite and possibly higher nitrate. If so, you should be able to perform a large water change and you're fish safe.

I was thinking if tomorrow I will have 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite or close to 1ppm nitrite to dose 2ppm ammonia and see what happens?

It's only day five of being wet.

Did any one point you to the fishless cycling methods or instructions?
