Hi All!

Great to be part of another online reef community!
Thought i'd introduce myself first, My names Jonathan (jono) I'm 15 and currently residing in Sydney Australia. I've recently decided to take the plunge and setup a saltwater tank after years of keeping FW tanks, mainly kept and still do, Eartheaters and other amazonian fish species..
I toyed around with the possibility of setting up a reef tank a few years back, that idea was scraped due to insufficient funds! 1 year later, i decide to start saving up in belief a cheap good starter may appear in my local marine classified. Fast forward 1 year later, after missing several Set up's my mate Tells me he'll get rid of his 21gal setup dirt cheap for me!

So hopefully i should be getting it sometime this week!
Fits perfectly in my tight budget and comes with alotta goodies, (deltec mce300 skimmer, 21gal all in one tank, tunze 6025 (mod), aqua one mg600 halide, jager heater)
Plan is to keep a healthy balanced Mix reef consisting of several species of SPS and LPS, Something visually appealing to both myself/family and guest..

But before that all happens I've got a few questions, if you fellas dont mind!

Basically wondering if anyone knew anything about the deltec mce300 skimmer mod? (removal of pump for maxijet1200).

Also how much turnover should i be roughly aiming for a mix reef tank? Would it be worthwhile investing in a Vortech Mp10?
With my current setup, i would roughly have around 5000-6500 l/h of flow.

Would love to also know if NSW would be a better option over ASW? i know nsw will vary with minerals and parameters etc, but currently NSW seems like a much cheaper alternative then ASW
But if i was to go ASW then what salt would be the best? i heard Deltec's DD h20cean was one or if not the best currently on the market.

Oh yea and what test kit should i look at getting? Does anyone have any cheap hanna checkers?

I know i shouldn't be thinking about it yet, though what addictives/trace elements/chemicals should i be looking at for improved growth, colour in the corals and to keep parameters in tack

Also was pondering with the idea of getting rid of my halide setip and getting a LED unit, thoughts?

Oh and what Media should i be looking at for the sump?

cheers
jono

Hi Jonathan and welcome to R2R! Great to have you!

Cheers!

Welcome Jono! I'll comment on a couple of your points.

- I'm running an LED setup right now. Very happy with the growth and most of the coloration. If I were to recommend an LED setup, I would say DIY and make sure you cover a wide wavelength with various bulbs. Check out ledsupply.com and LED forum here for some great information.
- I've tried several different test kits (API, Red Sea Pro, Salifert) and am currently using the Red Sea Pro. I've been happy with the results.
- Don't have any experience with the MP10, but have read nothing but great things.
- A 20% water change every 2 weeks have keeps most of my trace elements up, but I do need to dose 2 part and MG every once in a while. I've found my corals like that :)

As much as i would love to SKinz78, I can't.
I'm based in Australia and would be impossible to recieve/buy any live goods from overseas unless i have a permit, even then we have regulations on what we can/cannot bring in.

Thanks guys feels great to be here!
Got my tank today and spent the last half hour sanding the calcium and coraline deposits!

Will get photos soon.
