So I am new to marine fish keeping. I've been keeping freshwater fish and plants consistently for the last 5 years and prior to that I've had tanks as a kid and in to my early twenties. I have been gifted a complete 120g and 60g marine setup by someone who is getting out of the hobby completely. I'm very thankful and fortunate to receive them as the 60g is stocked already. I've always wanted to have a reef tank and now I've jumped right in to the deep end so to speak. I don't have the 60g, yet.
I've been passively researching saltwater for the last 2 years and have been doing 5hrs a day of research for the last 2 weeks.
I've figured out how all of the equipment works. Cleaned the Icecap 3k gyre (it was whining like crazy and driving me crazy) by soaking it in vinegar and scrubbing with a bottle brush and sponge. The programming on that thing is tedious and not all that intuitive in my opinion. It will take some time to get an ebb and flow going. Currently I've been able to set it to a constant 80% flow even though it's in Automatic mode, which doesn't make sense to me.
I have some live rock in the tank that was in the tank already and have been dropping in 1 small salad shrimp every couple of days to seed the bacteria and system with organic material.
I think I've figured out the evaporation rate and the levels for the sump. It's amazing how fast the water evaporates versus a fresh water system. I'm putting in approximately a gallon of water a day into the system.
I'll be seeing everyone soon as I'll have more specific questions instead of the what in the world is this stuff kind of questions I've been able to research and understand.
This community was highly recommended by a couple of reef keeper friends as the place to be and meet some quality people in the hobby.
Thanks!
