Hi from Hallzers

Here are some pictures of my tank build:

I wanted a tank that is 18" wide, 18" deep, and 72" long. That way it will fit in just about any room, and I can reach any part of the tank without having to wear a scuba mask!

Fiji Cube built the tank. I took this picture while picking it up in Minneapolis.

I recycled an old aquarium stand and made it taller. I wanted the tank to be as tall as possible, but so that I could still reach into the tank without having to stand on anything. So, the top of the tank comes right up to my armpit with the stand at this height. :)

Here's the tank when I got it home. The low lead glass is alright, but still not as good as my old acrylic tank. However, think its worth it because the glass is so much easier to keep clean!!! You can just scrape at it and not have to worry about scratches. :)

I plumbed it up with a Bean Animal overflow rig... which I love. Its normally nice and quiet!

Here is the original rock work I put in it. I wanted black substrate, black background, and black bottom so that my corals would really stand out. I think it was a nice idea... but in reality the bottom of the tank and rocks get covered in coraline and other junk anyways. I'm kind of lazy and don't clean the back of my tank much.

The "bonsai style" rock work was beautiful at first, but over time it was too delicate and ended up breaking apart. Leaving me with my current crappy rock work which hopefully will get a makeover this month!

Wow! Thanks for all the pics you shared. I think the current rockwork is really cool. And those fat goldfish must be very expensive!

Thanks, the current rockwork has decomposed and fallen apart. The central "tree" collapsed yesterday. It is somewhat of a mess when you are standing in the living room looking at it in person.

Well a pair of Japanese Ranchu don't require reef lighting, a sump, zeovit, dosers, apex, etc. So the cost for the fish is high but the overall cost of the whole tank is probably the same as an average reef tank. :)

Yea, I hear you. My wife is supportive of my new build, she frowns everytime I let her know I made a purchase since I'm waaaaay over budget.... especially since I havent even started to set it up. Lol. (Not laughing at her. Laughing at how crazy expensive this stuff gets to be).

OUCH!

I just took the plunge and sold off all the rest of my remaining stony corals today and am going 100% Ultra Low Maintenance... trying to get some more high-end multi-color and rare softies to brighten up my tank some more.

It was tough to sell some of my 7" and 8" colonies that I've had for the last 3 years... but the good news is I've found some really cool and rare new corals. This is what I want my tank to look like a year from now: (100% photosynthetic softies)

Well... maybe 2 years from now this stuff is REALLY hard to find

Hi I'm Hallzers. I used to breed Japanese Ranchu and got into reefing around 4 years ago. I have pared back to just one reef tank: a 99 gallon custom rimless in my living room, with a 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank in the basement for my sump. I am currently revising my system and getting rid of my hard corals and going over to a softy tank, because its what I enjoy the most. My current system is a variety of toadstools, a variety of stereoneptheas, and some other leathers and softies... and maybe a dozen other LPS & SPS that I haven't gotten rid of yet. Maybe will wait til I start running out of room. :)
Welcome to R2R Hallzers

Love the colours in those corals.

First order of business: Welcome. Glad you joined the cult...err I mean R2R community!

Second order of business: I had to look up what a Japanese Ranchu was. I'm not proud of myself, but humble enough to admit it....and I love those fish.

Lastly, I hope you find this community as awesome as my wife and I do!
