They help maintain your tank for you. they can get out of hand if you overfeed your tank. they are kept in check by a clean tank.

Yes, it's perfectly safe to return to the tank. You may catch them nibbling on corals, but they only eat the dead material. They will not consume healthy tissue. Now, if you get fireworms (a relative that's a bright red - you'll know them if you see them niw that you know what the okay ones look like) get rid if them; that variety is predatory.
