Hello all,

I have just joined this forum and I see this is very useful for beginners like me. After retirement, my father is interested in raising ornamental fishes; thus, I have intention of building a small lake at the terrace of my house for him. I can do that, but I'm so curious about the type of fish that we should raise. I hope to hear your suggestions. Thanks a lot!

Welcome to R2R!

Honestly, raising most of the saltwater fish in the hobby is a full time job since you're essentially growing the food source also. Haven't done it personally but if you do the reading you'll certainly see. Bangaii cardinals is the lone exception I can think of off hand. They'll breed in large systems & have enough food to sustain them possibly.

You really won't be able to raise fish in a pond type system but having an outdoor saltwater pond would be awesome just to enjoy the fish.

Here's the fish breeding section - https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/fish-breeding-forum.153/

There's lots of info on R2R. Lots of new species are being bred (quite awesome honestly). So it's kind of a new part of the hobby.

Welcome to R2R! As for the type of fish, I would suggest you and your dad go to some nice local fish stores and do some research online to see what you like. Are you planning on freshwater fish, such as koi and Oscar or trying to breed saltwater fish? Either way, welcome!
