My .02 is include in your setup a 10g sump. A small skimmer would be good too. Look for a 20g with a built in overflow or a hang on overflow. 10g baffled sump using a sock filter, bag of carbon, mechanical/floss/sponge in the baffles. 2 Shatterproof 75w heaters or a single 150w. I like to be a little overpowered with heaters being in the northeast US. Use a failsafe for the heater. Finnex heater controller is awesome. I would go with a 165w led black box for a light. I run mine 100% blues and 10-20% whites with ramp up and ramp down 5am-8pm. Moons are on 8-10pm. I recommend using caribsea ocean direct sand, marco dry rock cherryscape, and some bacteria colony or go more natural cycle. If you intend to have stony corals and versatile reef life go with Red Sea Coral Pro salt. Always mix 1.025. If just fish you can get away with using something cheaper with less trace elements and lower salinity.
Quarinetine your fish for 6 weeks in a separate 10g setup using a simple hangon filter, no sand, no rock, a couple white PVC elbows, and 50-75w heater. Have some medications on hand. Treat your QT with dewormer called Prazipro. Also have some metroplex, coppersafe on hand.
Acclimate your fish if going from different salinity LFS to QT and QT/DT. Use acclimation box when introducing new fish.
Test kits to have on hand. Refractometer and calibration fluid. Salifert test kits are awesome. Red Sea basic test kit. PH, Amonia, Nitrate, Nitrite. Copper test for QT. Reef test Calcium, Magnesium, Alk, Phosphate.
Dips are also good to have on hand if putting in corals. Coral RX, lugols iodine, hydrogen peroxide, and medicoral.
Also teaching some reef safety. I use some long gloves to protect my tank life and myself. I scrub down using hot water, and careful of how I use detergents and cleaners. There are some dangerous bacterias, and toxins produced inside our tanks.
Link to the gloves.
