WELCOME TO R2R!Personally I would not run a 13 hour photo period during cycling.Alge could become a problem with those lengths at first.

What lighting schedule would u recommend for cycling? 8h 4h I’m a greenhorn so school me pls, after tank is cycled do I slowly go back to 13h? I’ve read contradicting opinions on this topic have read u want it on reg schedule to keep live bacteria alive , I copyed another members lighting schedule was my reason having it on that long

Ah diatoms...it shows everything is progressing, but it is a pain to deal with. You clean everything off and then it shows up again the next morning. My tank goes back and forth with diatom blooms, but I just set up my current build in November. It is part of the fun with a new tank. Your tank is looking great.

Diatoms are algae that eat silicates to help build their “shell”. Without silicates, they’ll die. If you have no other livestock, why not give them lights to speed along the process? Silicates are part of sand, so your sand is actually feeding them. Once they consume all of the silicates in the sand, they’ll slowly disappear. This is part of cycling a tank. After that, you’ll want to make sure that what ever water you’re adding is free of any type of silica. Also, I can’t see from the pics, but you’ll want to find rock or some source of coralline algae. Besides it being beautiful, it helps to keep other types of algae at bay. But that’s another topic for later. Good luck.

I don’t see anything wrong with your lighting schedule. Kind of hard to mess anything up at this stage (kind of*). Looks like you’re on track and tank looks nice. Get that coralline going.

Can’t see your pic it didn’t load post again if u can? so I got my Ammonia nitrate nitrite tested all were zero so nitrite should be rising soon , gonna do a water change lfs said tank is cycled enough to add cuc gonna wait a little longer just to be safe , what cuc would everyone recommend and why thanks r2r members ! Love this site feel as if I hav alot years of experience watching my back

Until you put some sort of livestock in your tank, your ammonia won’t change. Ammonia is basically fish pee. The bacteria helps to break down the pee. And then you have your cycling started. I’d add some bacteria (can buy at LFS). You then need to watch your ammonia and nitrates and such. I prefer snails (turbo snails are nice) for CUC but if nothing for it to eat, you may have to put in some sinking pellets. Also for CUC, think about what you ultimately want in the tank later on. For example: Thinking about adding corals? Don’t get a camel shrimp as a starter CUC.

Nassarius and cerith snails are great for cleaning the sandbed. And I'd definitely get some red or blue-legged hermits for detritus and leftover food.

I also like shrimps. I have a small brown one (not sure what kind). He’s not pretty but he’s a great cleaner. Eats any type of hair algae, leftover food, or whatever the snails miss.

I used fritz turbo start for my bacteria and ammonia source, thinking of getting 2 nassarius snail for cleaning the sand , 2-3 trochus because they can flip themselves over and seem to be recommend more want some kind of shrimp goby pair and a cleaner shrimp that will prob be it for cuc want to just hav a pair of black storm clownfish as my main fish will introduce them last after a while, as for corals want some sort of rbta candy coral, hammer coral, maybe frogspawn a scolly some Zoas
