Hi.

hi welcome to the reef going to love it here!!
lots of fun/info/fun/help/fun....
jmo tank with sump, more water volume, room for eq,fuge:)

Greetings, it all depends on personal taste and stocking plans...

for my way of reefing i prefer to keep a very lightly stocked with fish...mixed reef and just run a HOB filter i like to Keep It Simple,

next preference would be an all in one if moderately stocking plus equipment like the heater is unseen in the rear chamber,

not a fan of heavily fish stocked or SPS reefs but if i was a sump would be the way to go for the extra water volume and filtration possibilities without the display looking like a Frankenstein's monster like creation of Hang on Equipment and tubes for dosing etc

Hi there,

Let the reefing began. Is there much of a benefit for getting a tank with sump or would an all-in-one suffice? Looking to start with a 40 gal breeder and use HOB filters or should I drill it an do a DIY overflow?

Hi Wak. Welcome to R2R.

@Wakdikyat You can try to do a DIY overflow but I suggest getting say.. an EShopps instead. It will save a lot of possible headaches unless you are good with Acrylic or other plastics. My experience was not good. I tried to make an overflow (internal and external) and after dropping it and having it pop at the seams, I gave up. But a 40B is a great starter tank, If you can do bigger, go with a 75 or a 120.. Great dimensions for 4 foot tanks.

Welcome to the Reef.

I have a tank with a sump, and an AIO. The sump gives you more options and AIO limits the space. But an AIO can also be easier when starting out because their is less plumbing issues and just a simpler design to start with

I like having a sump to hide as much equipment as possible. Not necessary to have one though. This article might help:
