Just figured I drop a note here being new to this site. I've been in the hobby for 8 years, I'm in my 3rd system. I went from a 30g to a 75g with a 35g display refugium and now a 180g mixed reef with a 75g hexagon anemone tank and a 100g+ sump/refugium and a 55g QT and 24g diy rimless frag tank). I'm a member of SWFMAS (South West Florida Marine Aquarium Society) which as of July has about 150 members and a great website and forum. I kind of like to do things a bit different than the standard way. My DT has quite a few unique design features, most of which you can't see now because of LR placement and coral growth. Here is a photo of the entire system.

Looks great Ron and welcome to R2R!

Nice looking tank! Welcome to R2R 1smile1

Hi there!! Welcome to R2R!! You have a gorgeous tank!! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm sure I learn some new things here at R2R. And I hope I can pass along some of what I have learned in 8 years of having fun. For me it started with snorkeling. And now that long weekends in the Florida Keys is just a 4-5 hour drive, we do 3-6 trips a year. That's why I started with aquariums, to have a bit of that snorkel feeling in the house 24/7. Then 2 other factors started to work. First one is, I love to learn about new things. I've had many, many hobbies over the years. Some have been short term, like becoming a private pilot (4 years), and some have been all my life, like photography, sports cars, sports car racing and Formula 1 racing. But what they all have in common was the stuff I needed to learn about each one. And marine aquariums have been a pretty long learning curve. The second hook was my desire to do things with my hands and engineer my own designs. Winter teardowns of my old race car was as much fun, although not nearly as exciting, as racing during the summer. The first 30g tank build was very traditional. The 2nd build was a 75g DT with a 35g hexagon display refugium done back when refugiums were just getting popular. But this 3rd build has some pretty unusual characteristics, like return flow from the sump which is delivered over the back of the tank by 2 returns that alternate via a SCWD and the water is sprayed out into the tank by 2 big spraybars from behind the LR wall. They snake down the inside back wall in a big 'square shaped S' made of 1/2" pvc pipe and with lots of little holes that spray out in about a 45 degree range from up to down but mostly directly out into the backside of the rocks. When I open up the ball valve between the 3200gph sump pump and the SCWD, the flow thru the rocks, blows any sand or detritus off the rocks and corals. It also makes for a nice flow out from behind the rocks and mostly up from under the corals and so far it seems to be working really well.

Hello and Welcome to R2R!! Do you have any pics of your build? Would like to see how you built the return

I do have some pics from the build. Here is the basic stand with tanks and big equipment. The stand ia 10 1/2' long, 30" deep and 36" tall.

The sump pump is just below this pic. The water is pumped up into a manifold. The pipe with the 66% open valve goes to the SCWD and then the 2 pipes on the side of the SCWD go up and over the back of the tank. The SCWD is a switching unit that runs off an impeller in the flow of the water. I used unions so it would be easier to take out and clean, but in 2+ years I haven't toched it.

The returns are 2 of the 3 pipes that go over the back of the tank. You can see the 2 pipes that make up the 2 'square S' shape. The S pipes have a lot of small holes that face mostly out into the tank, but some point up and some point down. In a dry tank test the water was squirting all the way to the front glass.

Here you can see each pipe better.

This is what it looked like when I first got it up and running.

And here it is as of a couple of weeks ago. Even the new 5 month old kitten likes it!

If you have any questions about the rest of the 'stuff' in or around the tank, feel free to ask.

Hi, welcome to r2r!!! I love your tank and especially the kitty perch. That is so cute!!!

Maia (my ya) the kitten, loves any kind of water movement. When I open the sliding door to the sump, she is right there to look into the frag tank. She even did a chin up on the side of the sump to my 55g QT which is taller than she was. She reached up and hooked her claws over the edge and then did a chin up and hung her chin over the top edge of the sump with her back feet about 2-3" off the ground. The wife even got her a 'fountian' drinking bowl for her water. She watches us in the shower and comes in after we are done and open the door. Oh, and she loves to watch the toilet flush... oowww!
