Hibernating acros

Hi I have often pondered this question how to break hibernation in acros, I understand that stress from several different sources cause corals to shut down. But what can you do to encourage/speed up recovery and ultimately growth.

More often than not they will start to grow when they are ready and adjusted to your system.

Fragging them sometimes encourages growth.

I find fragging a dormant coral to encourage growth to be risky... if you want to encourage a growing coral to branch more, then that can sometimes work.

Stability, highest possible quality light, low but detectable building blocks and time... just the basics are usually what is necessary.

I agree with this post 100%. Fragging a dormant coral does nothing for me. It just heals and that's it.

But when any part of the coral is starting to grow, fragging usually stimulates growth.

Thanks guys didn't think there would be a magic switch unfortunately.
Would be great to have a deeper understanding of a corals physiology like we do with plants.
That way we may be able to control things better in the corals favour.

Snipping the tips hasn’t really worked well for me. On a few pieces it just heals and stays dormant.

Increasing Ph to at least 8.30 from around 8.0 gave my dormant corals are growth spurt.

I’ve had sps sit and do nothing for quite awhile then 1 day just start to take off. I don’t have the answer why

This is an easy one. If you can convince the coral that you are not that excited about it growing, then it will grow like a weed. If you can't wait to see it grow into a beautiful colony, it will never grow just to spite you. Cough...acid trip milli...cough

Try not to point at it, or tell anyone about it for awhile, see if that helps.

Interesting to hear others not have good luck with small clippings "wake up" dormant Acroporas, I have done it many times with good results.
Maybe lady luck was on my side? lol

Growing sps can be a test of anybodies patients. In the 4 years that my system has been up and running I have had very few that have grown fast in the first few months. Most take time to acclimate and sometimes can take a year before they do anything more than encrust. If you find a magical way to encrease growth, please share.

You could always try shocking them with a low voltage current. No, for real, its a thing.

Mayne raise the temperature and itll come out of hibernation lol. If it isnt growing its lacking something imo. Maybe an amino acid.

I have had probaby 75% success trimming the tips to spark growth. The other times the acro just healed over and sometimes finally started new growth from the edges of the encrustment.

Rasing the temperature was more of a joke. But it wouldnt hurt to try it if its not higher than 83f.
